Do you enjoy walking but want to do this at a leisurely pace? Fed up with walking groups that want to beat the clock over the distance of the walk? Or maybe you are new to walking and fear that you won't be able to keep up with experienced walkers? Then come and join the SHEFFIELD SHAMBLERS WALKING GROUP!
We are a group of people of all ages and from every walk of life who enjoy walking and having a good time. Pleasant company and a good sense of humour is essential on all our walks. If you are looking for formal walks organised with military precision and strict codes of conduct, then this club is not for you!
Dogs are welcome, but must be kept on a lead at all times.
The best way to describe what the Shamblers is all about is to tell you about some of our recent walks...
Yorkshire Sculpture Park
On a rather damp november morning we went to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park for a leisurely saturday walk. It started off a bit damp so we headed for the cafe. A cup of coffee later it had brightened up and we set off for a wander around the park.
It was leisurely even by Shamblers standards, as we took time to enjoy the fantastic installations and sculptures in the park, however we clocked up a few miles, and as the day progressed the weather improved and we all enjoyed the change of scenery and fresh air.
Doncaster to Conisborough
Perhaps not an inspiring walk at first sight but a very pleasant day out, an easy river-side walk and an opportunity to put our map reading skills to the test trying to find our way out of Doncaster town centre!
Once we found the river - and more importantly, the right side of the river, it was all plain sailing and there was even a pub to hand when we stopped for lunch. Good planning that!
Challenging Walks
At the opposite end of the scale we do manage the odd 'challenging' walk. Last year we walked from Longdendale to Bleaklow Head - where the heavens opened and the wind blew rain at us horizontally. We were all hallucinating about hot showers by the time we got down again!
More recently, on our expedition to Snowdonia, an intrepid summit party braved the cold and the crowds to reach the top of Snowdon at 3560ft. True to its name there was snow on the last 500ft or so but it was still standing room only on the summit pinnacle! Fab views tho as the clouds cleared just in time for us to look down from the top of the world - well - the top of Wales anyway!
